Sunday Notebook: Eco-friendly Vibe hair salon opens in St. Augustine – The Florida Times-Union

Vibe Hair Co. opened July 5 in St. Augustine as a certified Green Circle salon.

Raised in St. Augustine, Sam Stark lived in California for a few years where she learned about Green Circle salons. She had dreamed of opening up a salon and giving back to the earth. She returned to St. Augustine to be close to family and now owns an eco-friendly salon.

“I had always dreamt of owning my own salon, but didn’t think that it would happen this quickly,” Stark said.

Green Circle salons repurpose and recover up to 95 percent of the resources that were once considered waste — such as hair, leftover hair color, foils, color tubes, aerosol cans, paper and plastics, according to Vibe.

The salon’s grand opening also raised funds for the nonprofit Her Song Jax that works against human trafficking.

Vibe is at 2730 S. U.S. 1, Suite M, across from the Nissan dealership in Southgate Square. It is open 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Jax Federal earns designation,

acquires new branch location

Jax Federal Credit Union has been recognized with the America Saves Designation of Savings Excellence, one of seven credit unions and 11 banks nationwide, according to the company.

It’s also the third year in a row to receive the recognition and the only Northeast Florida-headquartered institution, Jax Federal said. The award is presented each year to financial institutions that succeed in getting people to open and add to wealth-building accounts.

In addition, Jax Federal’s newly purchased 5,150-square-foot building at 9802 Old Baymeadows Road is its ninth location in Northeast Florida and the beginning of its branch expansion plan.

The building previously was a Fidelity Bank branch, which closed in April 2019. Jax Federal officials said renovations are expected to begin in July with an estimated opening in October 2019.

It will be staffed with nine full-time employees, as well as dedicated office space for mortgage loan officers and investment advisers to meet with members.
