TAMPA — A nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of low-income families living near the University of South Florida has received a grant to build two modular homes that single parents can lease to own.

University Area Community Development Corp. (CDC) was awarded a $125,000 affordable housing grant through the TD Charitable Foundation’s Housing for Everyone grant competition, an outreach program of TD Bank.

“Low-income families face significant barriers to sustainable home ownership, which is a major vehicle for building wealth and economic opportunity,’’ said Sarah Combs, University Area CDC executive director and CEO, in a news release. “Through this grant, we will be able to change the lives of these University Area families.”

The new homes, scheduled to begin construction in January, will be built on brown spaces formerly abandoned or vacant, and will be accessible for $666 to $1,066 per month.

Families will be selected from the University Area CDC’s STEPS for Success program in partnership with Safe and Sound Housing, a family and neighborhood strengthening strategy that works with STEPS to provide lease-to-purchase housing in the community.

University Area CDC offers support for thousands of Tampa residents through youth programs, adult education and resource assistance. Its primary mission is the redevelopment and sustainability of the disavantaged neighborhoods surrounding University of South Florida’s Tampa campus.

The Housing for Everyone grant competition is one of the TD Charitable Foundation’s most widely known programs. The competition invites local non-profit organizations from Maine to Florida to submit proposals outlining their plans and initiatives to support and provide affordable housing initiatives in their communities.

Twenty-five organizations throughout TD Bank’s territory from Maine to Florida were awarded a $125,000 grant for a total grant donation of $3.125 million in 2017.
