The head of a leading food manufacturing and processing company says he will be pushing for other commodities to be properly packaged and labelled for sale, as is being done for sugar.
Chief Executive Officer of the Seprod Group of Companies, Richard Pandohie, says commodities such as flour, rice and cornmeal should also be packaged and labelled for sale.
Speaking on Independent Talk this morning, Pandohie said this will improve the safety and quality of the products, as well as allow for traceability in the event of contamination.
Pandohie says implementing the revised standards for packaging and labelling of sugar is something for which he has been advocating.
He says in addition to improving quality and safety, the packaging and labelling of sugar will also reduce illegal sale on the retail market.
Meanwhile the CEO of the Consumer Affairs Commission Dolsie Allen says extending the packaging and labelling requirement for other commodities is something that is on the cards.
The National Compliance Regulatory Authority (NCRA) yesterday confirmed that the agency will be moving to enforce the standards for packaging and labelling of other commodities as well as household products.
